💼 Spotlight Interview: Phillip Nulty of America's One Septic
At Iron-Vac Trucks, we love shining a spotlight on the hardworking pumpers keeping America flowing. Today, we’re featuring Phillip Nulty, owner of America's One Septic, who’s been in the game for over two decades and has a story that shows grit, growth, and commitment to his customers.
👷♂️ A Family Legacy Turned Full-Time Passion
Phillip first entered the septic industry in 2004 after buying the business from a family friend who had started it in 1972. What started as a leap of faith quickly became a lifelong pursuit.
“I decided to get into the industry, and I’ve been stuck in it ever since,” Phillip jokes.
🛻 Two Trucks, Steady Grind
America’s One Septic currently operates two trucks out of their shop each morning, aiming to complete 4 to 5 jobs per truck per day. Whether it’s residential cleanouts or tougher commercial jobs, their team is committed to customer satisfaction.
“We try to get them cleaned and get back to the shop to enjoy our family.”
📚 Learning the Ropes – A Septic “College Degree”
Like many in the trade, Phillip faced a steep learning curve early on.
“The first five or six years… I call that my college degree in septic pumping,” he says.
But through perseverance and relationship-building, his business began to grow — and it hasn’t slowed down since.
💩 The Toughest Job? Sixty Years of Sludge
When asked about the hardest job he’s ever tackled, Phillip didn’t hesitate:
“A tank that hadn’t been pumped in 60 years — solid from top to bottom. We had to bring water in just to break it up. Took half a day.”
Even when jobs run long or harder than expected, he emphasizes the importance of delivering on your word:
“The customer wanted the price we quoted over the phone. We made the customer happy and got the tank pumped. We got off a little early that day.”
🧠 Evolving Systems Mean Evolving Knowledge
Phillip points out how the septic industry has changed in the last 20 years. With larger homes, advanced systems, and treatment plants replacing gravity-fed systems, it’s more important than ever to keep learning.
“Not only do I have to educate myself, but I also have to educate the customer.”
From explaining pump frequency to helping homeowners understand their system type, Phillip makes education a key part of his business.
💬 Final Advice: Treat People Right
“The septic industry — if you stay at it, it’ll keep growing with you. As long as you treat your customers right and do a good job educating them, you’ll stay busy.”
