What is a baffle?
A baffle is a metal wall inside of a vacuum tank, designed to control the flow of liquid during transportation. Without baffles, liquid would slosh freely from one end of the tank to the other. This would cause major problems. Baffles break up the motion of liquid which reduces liquid surge. You can think of it as a shock absorber for your tank!
Why are Baffles Important?
Liquid waste is heavy. When it moves freely around in a tank, it can shift your truck's center of gravity and make handling more dangerous - especially during stops or turns. A well-placed baffle minimizes the surge, keeping your truck stabilized and your driver safe.
Constant movement of liquid puts stress on the walls of the tank. Over time this can lead to cracking and weld failures. Baffles absorb that pressure and redirect it evenly throughout the tank.
Some baffles are designed to allow proper airflow and liquid movement while the tank is being used. This helps maintain steady suction and avoid clogging.
In many regions, tanks that transport liquid waste are required to have baffles to meet DOT (Department of Transportation) safety standards.
